Connecting the Remote: How CSTS and Berca Built a Reliable Network at a Oil an Gas Site with Cisco Meraki

The collaboration between CSTS and Berca demonstrates how a cloud-managed networking solution like Cisco Meraki can be the ideal fit for heavy industry operations, especially in locations with limited infrastructure access..

Through strategic planning, expert configuration, and continuous technical support, this project stands as a compelling example of how technology can bridge geographic limitations and power mission-critical connectivity.

In 2017, CSTS (Chiyoda-Saipem-Tripatra-SAE) was formed as part of the development of the Train 3 project, following a major expansion initiative by a leading client in the Oil and Gas industry.

Located in a remote area, the project presented unique operational challenges one of the most critical being the need for a reliable network infrastructure that could be centrally managed. Throughout the project lifecycle, CSTS played a vital role in supporting Oil and Gas operations at the site.

Key Challenges

The Oil and Gas site was situated far from the central IT infrastructure, making conventional network management difficult. The operations team required a network solution that was:

Stable and reliable, to support internal communications and monitoring systems.

Remotely manageable, without requiring technicians to be physically present at the site.

Scalable, to accommodate the growing number of connected devices and operational needs.

Additionally, procurement and implementation needed to be carried out in stages at a large scale, with over 1,200 Cisco Meraki devices eventually deployed across the project.

Berca’s Role in the Solution

Berca Hardayaperkasa was entrusted with the task of designing and performing the initial configuration of all Cisco Meraki devices used in the project. Backed by its technical expertise and experience in handling national-scale implementations, Berca ensured that every unit was fully prepared for immediate deployment using zero-touch provisioning.

The types of Meraki devices deployed included access points, switches, and security appliances.

While physical installation was handled by the CSTS team on-site, Berca provided full technical support to ensure that the rollout ran smoothly and adhered to manufacturer standards.

Why Cisco Meraki?

Cisco Meraki was chosen for its ability to address the specific needs of a remote industrial environment. The key advantages included:

Cloud-Based Centralized Management: Enabled centralized control and monitoring of all devices via a single dashboard.

Real-Time Visibility & Alerting: Provided up-to-date information on device and network performance.

Ease of Deployment in Remote Locations: Eliminated the need for complex manual configuration.

Reliability and Security: Met the high-availability and data protection requirements of the Oil and Gas industry.

“This solution perfectly addressed our need for a network system that could be managed from anywhere, without sending teams to the field,” said one of the internal project engineers.

Impact of the Implementation

The Cisco Meraki network configured by Berca delivered measurable benefits throughout the project duration:

Provided stable connectivity for hundreds of devices and monitoring systems.

Enabled remote troubleshooting and monitoring by central IT teams.

Significantly reduced operational costs by minimizing field visits.

Ensured network efficiency and security in a high-stakes operational environment.
